Where is Camp "R"?

Where do the campers stay?
Boys and girls stay within their own units in the camp. Each unit has cabins that your child will be staying in for their week at Camp "R". Each cabin has 4-6 cabin members and each camper has a spring bed. There are 7-8 cabins per unit. Unit 1 cabins are named after American Indians such as Blackfeet, Iroquois, and Comanche. Unit 2 cabins are named after famous pioneers, such as Annie Oakley, Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie.

How much does it cost to send my child to Camp "R"?
For the summer of 2010 the cost to send your child to camp is $275 with an optional fee of $40 for horseback riding for campers 12 years and older.
A $25 deposit must accompany the application and the final balance paid in full one week prior to departure. Deposits will not be refunded. A maximum of $20 is optional for your child to purchase snacks, beverages, camp apparel (t-shirts, hats, etc...) and batteries at canteen.

| How long does my child
stay at Camp "R"?
Camp "R" runs 5 weekly sessions. The camp week is 6 days long, starting with the departure from Stephen Foster Center at 3:00 p.m. on the starting Sunday and going to Friday of that week when the campers return back to the Stephen Foster Center at 5:00 p.m.
Camp "R" does not offer weekend camp days. |
How do I sign my child up for Camp "R"?
To sign up your child for sessions during the summer of 2010 you can either download an application off the costs page and send it to the Camp "R" Main Office or call our main office at 412-621-3342 and ask to receive a camp brochure.

When and where do I drop off/ pick up my child before and after their camp week?
Drop Off at the Stephen Foster Center
Campers will be taken by bus, which will leave from the Stephen Foster Community Center Parking Lot, 286 Main Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15201 (Lawrenceville). Departure will be at 3:00 PM on your scheduled Sunday. We ask that you please be sure to deliver and pick up your child on time. If you are not at the Foster Center at departure time, it is then your responsibility to transport your child to camp.
Drop Off at Camp "R"
If you decide to transport your child(ren) on your own, please call the office before 9AM Friday (the Friday before your child(ren) will be scheduled for their camp week) and give the name(s) of the child(ren) you are taking. If you are planning to drive your child(ren) to camp on Sunday please do not arrive before 5PM.
Pick Up from Camp to the Stephen Foster Center
The bus will leave camp around 3:00 on Friday and arrive at the Stephen Foster Center at 5PM. Please be on time to pick up your child from the Stephen Foster Center Parking Lot.
Pick Up from Camp "R"
If for some reason you decide to go to camp to pick up your child on Friday (the last day of the week at Camp "R"), you must call the Main Office before 9AM on Thursday morning and tell us who you are...your child's name... relationship to child...etc. The camp Director will not release any child without notification from the Main Office. Please pick up your child(ren) at 3:00 PM. |

What kind of employees do you have at Camp "R"?
The Camp "R" staff consists of our Camp Director, Senior Staff (college age staff), Junior Staff (high school age staff) and CITs (high school age staff). All staff are former Camp "R" campers.

How will I know where everything is at camp?
Once you arrive at camp each unit will be split up (Unit 1 for boys, and Unit 2 for girls) and will be taken on a guided tour of the camp. After dinner on your first day you will visit your unit and learn the rules of the camp and the unit.

Can my child share a cabin with his/her friends?
Staff will do their best to put cabin mates listed on the application together.

What happens if my child gets sick at camp?
Each member of our staff is trained in CPR and First Aid. If more care is needed your child will be transported to the emergency room at Somerset Hospital. |

What if my child is on medication?
All medications are collected at the Stephen Foster Community Center and at Camp. Medications will be distributed at the appropriate time by the Camp Director. |
What if I don't know anyone at camp when I get there?
At one point or another all campers were once the new kid or came not knowing anyone. At Camp "R" their is no need to worry about making friends, the Unit becomes a big family in no time and friendship and courteousness to others is highly stressed. You will also have your cabin mates to hang out with!

Where do campers come from?
The majority of campers come from the city of Pittsburgh and the surrounding suburbs. We also have numerous campers come from Ohio, New York, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey.
